Define Bottle Neck. How to find / Root cause of Bottle Neck?

Define Bottle Neck.

Bottleneck is an important point to check, find out the reason for creating it, solve the problem & fixed it for maximum production. In the production line where production is hampered from the normal flow of production create Bottle Neck.

Simply - The lowest output point in the production line is called bottleneck.

It means the lowest capacity of one or more operations creates bottle neck in a line which results in lowest production.

To get maximum production & highest profit from a production line as well as from a factory, it is a very significant work for work study officer / Industrial Engineer to solve the bottle neck problem.

How to find Bottle Neck/ Root cause of Bottle Neck:

In general, we know lowest capacity operator creates bottle neck in a line. We can found out visually where there are more input but less output. So that actual flow of production hampered for the next operations. And finally output very less of that line end of the day.

There are some steps to find bottle neck operation on production floor…

  •         Make capacity Graph all operator of that line to find …
    • If manpower not balanced as per layout
    • Operator selection wrong
    • Identify low & high efficient area
    • Machine speed as per standard or below standard
    • Check new operator capacity those are used for absentees
    • Using excess motion

  •   Flow of all material are as per requirement or not. If not then it create bottle neck.
  •   Machine breakdown.
  •   Faulty panels.
  •  Check quality level cause reworks can create it more areas.

Conclusion:

As it causes an interruption to the flow of work & delays across the production process, leaving a bottleneck unsettle will always cost you more than resolving it.
